I am guilty of it, but at least I use a headset. Some people cannot multi-task. Some people have their hands full just driving, let alone talking on the phone, changing the radio station, using turn signals, etc. If you cannot handle driving and talking at the same time, don't do it. How may times have you been behind an erratic vehicle, only to pull beside them and they are talking on the cell phone, oblivious to anything around them? This is one of the reasons car manufacturers did not install laser cannons on cars.
A headset should be mandatory if you are using a cell phone while driving. At least you have two hands free to operate turn signals and hopefully be more cognizant of what is happening around you.
Just wanted to state my opinion.

LAT1-II
Ok, my mentor has challenged me to turn in my first task of this lesson. A thesis statement and annotated bibliography with 10 sources. In addition to the sources, I must give a 150 word summary of each source along with the qualifications of the author. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm at least it is on a topic I enjoy. Wolves. He wants this submitted by Thursday-next week. Time to get my learn on.

LAT 1
Well I started off on my second term with great enthusiasm, until I ran into my first real Thesis-research paper.I am able to choose any topic, write a question about it, than produce a Thesis statement with at least 3 argumentative points. Ok that does not sound too bad, until I read the other 4 parts. This is not going to be as easy as I thought.
I created a topic/question and Thesis statement after a couple days. I submitted it, and it was declared satisfactory. Next step, find 10 sources and write an annotated Bibliography. Each source must have at least 150 words. Including quotes and paraphrasing of text.
I originally chose Area 51; that was canned. I than chose Unions-Institution of the past? as my topic and that was accepted. I started doing the research and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I do not want to continue researching this topic and at the end have to write a 10-15 page research paper on it. :(
I kept going over in my mind-what topic can I write about that is argumentative but interesting? As it so often happens, a chance encounter with an email set the buzzers ringing in my head. Wolves! Of course, I have always had an affinity for them. I am interested in them, and the very subject brings up a heated debate about whether they should remain on the endangered species list, or let them be a trophy for some hunter during season.
I have finished my first part and submitted it.
TOPIC: Wolves
QUESTION: Innocent victim or vicious killer?
THESIS: Research has shown that wolves continue to be a controversial topic because of its reputation as killer of livestock, important link in the food chain, and pawn in the ongoing debates between Government and Environmental groups.
Waiting to hear back from the LAT1 mentors, and than the research begins.

Dakota
Several months ago, Dakota, our youngest Husky was running around with the other two Husky's in our yard. Suddenly I heard a "yelp" and suddenly Dakota was limping on three legs and whimpering. I thought perhaps he had stepped on something, but I could find nothing stuck in his paw or lower leg.
After Peggy got home a little later that evening, and we took Dakota to the Emergency Pet clinic to see Dr Hanson. Our worst fears were confirmed.Dakota had torn his Right rear Cruciate Ligament and part of his Meniscus. He is only 8years old, and we could let him limp around for the rest of his life. We opted to have the steel plate inserted in his right leg. Dr Hanson said "it improves on the original design"
We picked up Dakota after a day and half and what a site he was. His hair was shaved at the right rear leg, and he had a big cone over his head, so he would not attempt to take his stitches out. We think he is a little of a Drama Queen, he acted like he was in pain and could barely walk. We half carried him to the Volvo and gently lifted him in. On the way home he would moan in pain. He has always been a "talkative" dog, but he really carried on with the moaning and woo wooing all the way home.
He seemed a bit bitter once he was back in the house. Neeko and Zoe (the other two Husky's) were glad to see him. First thing we did was remove the cone from over his head, and replaced it with the new and improved inner tube design. He liked that much better. We fed him a little and took him outside to get some fresh air. We had to keep him on the harness and leash, so he would not attempt to run. Dr Hanson said the first two weeks are critical. He will only do the surgery on that leg one time. If it is torn out before it heals, there is nothing he can do.
We made it through the first two week, keeping him full of the sedatives and anti-inflammatory pills. Thank goodness, he was not that active as normal. We took him back for his check up and he was healing fine. Dr Hanson removed the stitches and said Dakota did not have to wear the inner tube anymore. Just continue to take him on short 5 minutes walks for another month.
Dakota was progressing great, we took him in for his 2 month checkup for a set of X-rays to check on the steel plate. It was perfectly attached and healing normally. We gradually took him out for longer and longer walks, and he was pretty much back to normal until.........................
A week before Memorial day, Peggy had let the dogs out to run around in the yard. When they came back in a short while later, Dakota was limping. We initially thought he had damaged his right leg again, but we were surprised he was limping and holding up his left rear leg this time.
Again we took him to Dr Hanson and Dakota had torn his other Cruciate Ligament this time. Once again, we left him to have surgery and picked him up a day and a half later. This time, when we picked him up he was in much better spirits, (maybe different pain pills?). We followed the same plan as before, but this time, he just wants to go outside and run around. We really have to keep him contained, it has not even been two weeks since the surgery. We are glad he is feeling better, and appears to be healing fine.
Dr Hanson said that 50 % of the dogs that tear a Cruciate Ligament, generally tear the other one within a few months. The good news is Dakota only has two rear legs, after this is healed; he won't be able to tear another.
Husky's generally live an average of 15 years, and we wanted Dakota to enjoy the rest of his life doing what he loves to do; running and playing with the other two Husky's. Another month or so, and he will be back out in the yard chasing Rabbits and whatever else ventures into our yard.

Second Term starts today.
OK time to get my learn on! Second term started today, so I think I will attempt to knock out the LAT1 class. This one is a bit more difficult than the LAE1 I completed at the end of my first term. The LAE1 was an essay containing between 750-1000words on a subject I picked. a hobby I enjoy, and than I had to convince a friend to try it. Wasn't too hard, just typing and editing, followed by more typing and editing. Than finishing up with proofing the entire thing. I actually let it sit a day, so I could review it one more time. Looked good to me, so I submitted and passed with a B!
From what I understand LAT1 is more involved. Requiring sources, references, etc. I just checked my program and do not see it loaded yet. Let me see what I can do..................................more to follow.

Biceps Tendon
Two weeks ago on a Tuesday afternoon, while working out. I heard a "pop" and felt a shudder run through my right arm. I thought to myself " that did not sound good". I rested a few minutes, than proceeded to attempt to lift a light dumbbell with my right arm. That attempt did not go so well. The weight although light, felt heavier than it should. Since I normally finish my upper body workout with Biceps and than Abs. I decided, I would skip the rest of the Bicep workout, and finished the rest of my workout without any issues.
I got ready to take a shower and noticed my "Popeye Muscle" on my right arm. It appears that I tore the Biceps Tendon off the shoulder, and the muscle and tendon are at the bottom of my arm; giving me the appearance of the "Popeye Muscle" when I flex that arm. Nice peak, but it looks a little deformed. Instead of a full muscle starting at the shoulder tie in and running down to the elbow, there is a couple inch gap between my shoulder muscle and Bicep.
Odd thing, is that I did not feel any pain, more of a discomfort. No signs of bruising or discoloring of the arm, like I had seen in some of the other pictures I found while "Googling" Bicep Tendon tears. I scheduled an appointment with same Surgeon who had previously repaired my right shoulder a couple years ago. He took a look, had me perform some basic strength tests, and proclaimed; "Yep, you tore the outer Bicep tendon from the shoulder". My choices were either: leave it and have a slightly deformed right arm, but still relatively strong due to the inner Bicep muscle. Or, he could insert a small tool into the Bicep, fish around for the dangling tendon, and than re-attach it to my shoulder with a screw. Recovery is about a month in a sling; waiting for the tendon to attach itself to the bone. Than progressively harder resistance exercises until the arm gets back to normal. The bad news about the first option is that after several months, the muscle begins to atrophy due to non-use. If I was not still young and active, I might consider that, but I want to continue to work-out and eventually even play Senior soft ball (if I can find time).
I might have been a bit undecided, until this past weekend that is. While playing Volleyball, I made some slams, and hit backs, that really brought to the forefront just how painful and weak my arm could be. This time I did see discoloring and bruising of the arm; along with pain and more than a mild discomfort. I have an appointment later this month to chat with my Doctor one more time about my arm. I will schedule the surgery either for the last week of this month, or the first week of July. Just want to get it over with. Will keep you posted on my progress.
